Think space is a wide open frontier, empty and black except for the occasional asteroid? You have to see this truly stunning video.
YouTuber szyzyg compiled asteroid discovery and tracking from 1980 on. The video starts off a little slow, but by the late ’90s tracking picked up and the number absolutely skyrockets. Ultimately, the ring of green asteroid circling past Mars becomes so thick you become convinced the Earth should have been destroyed by giant chunks of proto-planet long ago. The video starts with under 9,000 asteroids; it ends in 2010 with over 500,000. Yikes.
New discoveries flash white before joining the swarming mass. The red ones are “earth crossers,” an asteroid whose orbit crosses Earth’s. Try not to think about it.
