Mexico‘s newest police chief? She’s a 20-year-old student [via USA Today]
20-year-old Marisol Valles, a Mexican criminology student and single mother, was sworn in Monday as the police chief of Praxedis Guadalupe Guerrero, a farming community of about 9,000 50 miles from El Past, Texas, because no one else would accept the job. The region is plagued with drug violence, to the point that the military has stepped in to help battle cartels, so Valles says she will focus on “preventative programs for schools and neighborhoods, rehabilitating public spaces and fostering better relationships between neighbors in order to improve general security.”
Virginia 4th-grade textbook criticized over claims on black Confederate soldiers [via The Washington Post]
A textbook used by Virginia fourth graders is under fire for claiming that “thousands of African Americans fought for the South during the Civil War — a claim rejected by most historians but often made by groups seeking to play down slavery’s role as a cause of the conflict.” The book’s author, Joy Masoff, has also penned books titled “Oh Yuck! The Encyclopedia of Everything Nasty” and “Oh Yikes! History’s Grossest Moments,” said she used the internet to research the role of African Americans in the Civil War. “It’s more than just an arcane, off-the-wall problem,” said David Blight, a professor at Yale University. “This isn’t just about the legitimacy of the Confederacy, it’s about the legitimacy of the emancipation itself.”
Germany frets over ‘bullied’ Knut’s love life [via Agence France-Presse]
Knut, a three-year-old polar bear in a Berlin zoo who enjoyed global fame when he was rescued and hand-fed as a cub, “is reportedly being bullied by a trio of older females, causing the country’s media to worry about the superstar’s love life.” Knut shares his enclosure with his mother and two other females. Although the public is concerned by video of the females treating him roughly, caretakers say that is normal behavior among polar bears and that Knut will learn to assert himself and become more dominant as he grows.
